Clinical Session

Historically, adults with normal hearing thresholds have not been candidates for traditional hearing devices, even though a sizable number of individuals in this group self-report communication difficulties. This course will review the emerging research that shows the linkage between subclinical hearing loss and other conditions such as cognitive decline and depressive symptoms. Additionally, the course will review emerging intervention strategies that hearing care professionals can recommend for this group, including the Signia Active product line.

Getting Sound to the Brain… Through the Wrist

Technology Session

What would the world be like if we could expand our senses beyond the capacities that we come to the table with? Can we feed sensory signals into the brain through atypical sensory pathways? In this talk, we’ll demonstrate how hearing loss and tinnitus can be addressed by turning auditory information into a series of vibrating patterns on the skin. This is done via the Neosensory Buzz, a small wristband with vibratory motors in the band.  Using this approach of sensory substitution, we can translate and feed almost any kind of data through the skin – thus expanding the human sensory experience.

Essentials of Forensic Audiology

Forensic audiology is the process of working with attorneys to arrive at a just settlement for clients with injuries involving hearing loss, tinnitus, vestibular, audiology malpractice, noise exposure, Americans with Disabilities Act issues, and other audiological legal concerns. Through very interesting cases, learn about the experiential and legal basics required to work within the criminal and civil legal systems as an expert witness on the plaintiff and the defense sides. Performance as an expert witness requires a basic understanding of attorney expectations and the Daubert rule, that governs expert testimony. About 97% of the cases are settled out of court, therefore report writing becomes an important part of the process. A general format for these reports will be provided.

Cognition, Cognitive Screenings, and Audiology

In clinical audiology, the most common complaint from people with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), people with listening disorders, and for many people with dementia and cognitive decline, is the inability to understand speech in noise. There are some 38 million people with hearing loss demonstrated on audiograms in the USA. However, there are an additional 26 million people (USA) with hearing difficulty and speech in noise difficulty. The challenge for hearing care professionals is determining which patient’s hearing difficulty and/or speech in noise problem originates with their hearing loss, their listening ability, or perhaps their cognitive status. As we progress professionally, and as society ages, it becomes increasingly important to be able to identify the origin and nature of the problem, prior to attempting to solve the problem!
