Getting Sound to the Brain… Through the Wrist

Technology Session

What would the world be like if we could expand our senses beyond the capacities that we come to the table with? Can we feed sensory signals into the brain through atypical sensory pathways? In this talk, we’ll demonstrate how hearing loss and tinnitus can be addressed by turning auditory information into a series of vibrating patterns on the skin. This is done via the Neosensory Buzz, a small wristband with vibratory motors in the band.  Using this approach of sensory substitution, we can translate and feed almost any kind of data through the skin – thus expanding the human sensory experience.

Essentials of Forensic Audiology

Business Development Session

Forensic audiology is the process of working with attorneys to arrive at a just settlement for clients with injuries involving hearing loss, tinnitus, vestibular, audiology malpractice, noise exposure, Americans with Disabilities Act issues, and other audiological legal concerns. Through very interesting cases, learn about the experiential and legal basics required to work within the criminal and civil legal systems as an expert witness on the plaintiff and the defense sides. Performance as an expert witness requires a basic understanding of attorney expectations and the Daubert rule, that governs expert testimony. About 97% of the cases are settled out of court, therefore report writing becomes an important part of the process. A general format for these reports will be provided.

Cognition, Cognitive Screenings, and Audiology

Clinical Session

In clinical audiology, the most common complaint from people with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), people with listening disorders, and for many people with dementia and cognitive decline, is the inability to understand speech in noise. There are some 38 million people with hearing loss demonstrated on audiograms in the USA. However, there are an additional 26 million people (USA) with hearing difficulty and speech in noise difficulty. The challenge for hearing care professionals is determining which patient’s hearing difficulty and/or speech in noise problem originates with their hearing loss, their listening ability, or perhaps their cognitive status. As we progress professionally, and as society ages, it becomes increasingly important to be able to identify the origin and nature of the problem, prior to attempting to solve the problem!

The New Patient Journey: How Audiology & Hearing Aids Have Changed Post-Pandemic and NEW BEST Practices

Business Development Session

According to Epic Health Research Network, health screenings were down as much as 67% last year due to fear over COVID, even for urgent health issues such as cancer screenings. For Audiologists, who treat the most vulnerable populations, this meant a significant drop in appointments and revenue. The last year has seen a radical transition in healthcare, not just in safety protocols, but also in what patients expect from Audiologists. Join Kevin St.Clergy, one of the top Audiology marketing experts in the world to hear how the patient journey and digital marketing has changed in the last few years. He’ll cover the 4 most common reasons practices are struggling now, why most traditional marketing fails, and what patients are really looking for. Plus, he’ll explain 3 ways to attract more patients and to leverage those tactics to have their best year ever last year, in spite of the pandemic.

Revolutionizing the Patient Experience Through Video Marketing

Business Development Session

It’s no secret that videos have become the most popular choice for content consumption today. In 2020, 96% of consumers increased their online video consumption, and 9 out of 10 viewers said that they wanted to see more videos from brands and businesses. As of 2021, an average person is predicted to spend 100 minutes per day watching online videos. This makes video content an irreplaceable part of any businesses’ strategy. The use of videos improves outcomes by delivering the right information, at the right time, from the right source. This session will introduce Vidscrips. Vidscrip is revolutionizing patient engagement with a simple, web-based platform that records providers’ own answers to frequently asked questions and shares them with patients through channels they already use, like the practice web page, or links sent directly to the patient’s phones.

Succeeding During Industry Disruption

The hearing industry is in transition again. Wait, maybe it is always in transition! The path for a patient to purchase is more complex than ever with the surge of hearing healthcare benefit programs, increase in digital competition, big box drawing in patients, provider scarcity, and OTC hearing aids entering the market. So how do we stay focused and keep in control? We must adapt to new ways of working. Define your company brand, build partnerships, become a visionary for your business and create the strategy to execute it.

The Importance of Ethical Selling in Hearing Aid Business Development

Many in the hearing dispensing industry apply product or brand selling methods rather than putting the focus on individual patient’s needs in improving their quality of life. This often ends in a dissatisfying situation for the patients, and spouse or family member. The needs of a patient are not only to amplify sound but, even more important, to help the patient and his/her spouse to an improved quality of life. Therefore a non-manipulative Ethical Selling Approach is crucial.

Workers’ Compensation Patients: Identifying Candidates and Solving the Payment Puzzle

Workers’ compensation hearing loss claims can be complicated and confusing. Determining whether a patient’s hearing loss should be classified as work-related is often intimidating, requiring a thorough understanding of OSHA regulations. The process of obtaining authorization for treatment, including hearing aid fittings, often becomes convoluted quickly as multiple government and private organizations are involved. Receiving authorization and being paid for these services within a reasonable timeframe, especially at the rate expected, is rare. This session will attempt to explain and unwind the details of administering a workers’ compensation hearing aid claim from start to finish, as well as offer solutions on navigating this process more effectively.

Improving Patient Satisfaction Through Proactive Hearing Instrument Care

As access to hearing instruments continues to increase, there is a new awareness of quality and features available in the market. These robust features allow patients to use hearing instruments in a multitude of environments they’ve never even considered in the past; including outside and working out whiling streaming their favorite songs. However, hearing instrument care remains largely unchanged over the past 30 years. Simply vacuuming, brushing, and wiping away debris is no longer going to keep a product from failing. Superficial drying of sensitive electronic components with high heat continue to allow devices to fail and allow patients to believe an OTC is a viable option. This presentation will address the current state of hearing instrument care, the patient experience benefit of improved moisture care using Redux, and the practice revenue benefit of improved proactive moisture care.

Improving patient outcomes through person-centered care: An introduction to Inspired by Ida

Evidence shows that supporting patients to be actively involved in their own care not only improves outcomes – it can also yield efficiency savings through more personalized treatment plans. This approach of actively involving patients in their own treatment is often referred to as person-centered care (PCC). Over the past decade, the acknowledgement of PCC has been steadily growing and it is increasingly integrated in standards and guidelines e.g., by the National Academy of Medicine and the International Organization for Standardization. However, the process of implementing PCC is still slow in places – and many hearing care professionals lack dedicated training in the area. This webinar outlines the fundamental principles of PCC and presents some of the key benefits. It introduces attendees to Inspired by Ida – a program established to help hearing care professionals implement PCC in their everyday practice, and includes concrete examples shared by existing Inspired by Ida members.
